COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course synthesises three powerful pedagogical models: Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Project-Based Learning (PBL), and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The core objective of our CLIL for Sustainable Development course is to equip language teachers with the skills and confidence to effectively integrate ESD into their language curricula, and create learning experiences that are not only effective for second language learning but also transformative for students. The SDGs offer teachers a powerful framework for Content and Language Integrated Learning, where Content (ESD) and Language are integrated into an engaging and motivating learning programme for upper primary and secondary level students, or young adults. A CLIL approach aligns well with the SDGs’ holistic and interdisciplinary nature, offering a rich authentic context for language learning, preparing students for the complex challenges of the 21st century. Using a Project-Based Learning methodology for implementing a CLIL-SDG module, teachers will design a PBL unit aligned with specific SDGs and their existing language curriculum standards.
