My name is Iwona Piasecka and I was born in Wroclaw, a wonderful city in the south-west of Poland. I lived there for almost 40 years and the rest of my family still lives there. Moving to Scotland was a life changing decision for our family. In 2010 my husband moved to Ayr to work here, and after two years our son and I moved here too.
Before we moved, I worked in banking for 15 years and after I was made redundant, I started working as an assistant in various companies. When we decided to move to another country, I was certain I could never do the same job. My office skills were not transferable and my English was not good enough to work as a secretary.
I knew I had to change something, so I enrolled in ESOL English. After some time, my English improved and I was offered a volunteer tutor position. My confidence got a serious boost when I was given the Learner of the Year Award in 2015.
For two years I was a volunteer in the Adult Learning in Ayr, Scotland. I got my qualifications through a 10-week course delivered by the South-Ayrshire Council and after that I was assigned for one-to-one English teaching and delivering ICT in a small group.
My career in banking was over, so I had to find another other job. Apart from volunteering, I was a cleaner, a waitress and a line worker in a factory. The last job I hated so much that I finally found the courage to apply for college to get qualifications enabling me to work in an office.
I graduated in 2018 in HNC Administration and IT. The college experience was one of the best things that happened to me in Scotland. Not only had I passed with flying colours, I was also elected as Class Representative and that was something extraordinary for a Polish girl with little confidence.
Sadly, the job market in Ayr is quite small and I still haven’t found a job in which I could excel. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of teaching and I decided to look for private students in English. To my surprise I also discovered the need for Polish lessons; in my small town ten people found me and became my students. I continue to be a freelance self-employed translator, interpreter and tutor.
